Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is set to spearhead a transformative project, unveiling plans to establish a state-of-the-art greenfield thermal power plant with a staggering capacity of 2,400 MW in the heart of Odisha’s Jharsuguda district. The groundbreaking initiative is poised to bring about significant advancements in the region’s power infrastructure and contribute to the nation’s growing energy demands.
NLC India Limited, a prestigious Navaratna company operating under the Ministry of Coal, has bestowed upon BHEL the prestigious EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contract for this colossal undertaking. The contract outlines the scope of BHEL’s responsibilities, encompassing engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, and commissioning of critical equipment such as boilers, turbines, and generators required for the plant’s operation.
The thermal power project has secured a strategic coal linkage from the Talabira II and III mines of NLCIL, ensuring a seamless and reliable supply chain for the generation of power. The formidable water requirements for the plant will be met through sourcing from the Hirakud reservoir, emphasizing BHEL’s commitment to sustainable resource management.

The project’s timeline reveals an ambitious schedule, with the commissioning of the first unit slated for the financial year 2028-29. This forward-looking initiative aligns with India’s broader vision for energy self-sufficiency and sustainable development.
Jharsuguda, strategically located in Odisha, has emerged as a key hub for industrial growth, and the addition of this thermal power plant is expected to significantly boost the region’s economic landscape. The project not only addresses the growing energy needs of the area but also aligns with national objectives of increasing power generation capacity to meet the demands of a burgeoning economy.
BHEL’s expertise in engineering and manufacturing, combined with NLC India Limited’s strategic vision, positions this venture as a beacon for future developments in the power sector. As the project takes shape, it is anticipated to create employment opportunities, drive technological innovation, and contribute to the socio-economic development of Jharsuguda and its surrounding regions.
The 2,400 MW thermal power plant stands as a testament to the commitment of BHEL and NLC India Limited towards fostering sustainable and robust energy solutions, thereby propelling India’s journey towards a greener and more energy-efficient future.
