In a significant development, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), the state-owned engineering giant, announced on Tuesday that it has clinched a monumental contract from power behemoth NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) to establish a 1,600 MW Singrauli thermal power project (Stage-II). The order, valued at over Rs 9,500 crore, excluding GST (goods and services tax), marks a pivotal milestone for BHEL and underscores its prowess in the power sector.
The Singrauli Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-III (2×800 MW), located in Sonebhadra District, Uttar Pradesh, will be a cornerstone project for meeting the energy demands of the region. BHEL, renowned for its engineering expertise, will oversee the supply of equipment, erection, commissioning, and civil works associated with the project.
According to the regulatory filing by BHEL, the company is committed to delivering Unit 1 within 50 months and Unit 2 within 54 months, adhering to stringent timelines to ensure timely completion and seamless integration into the power grid.
The announcement comes in response to the BSE’s query regarding news of BHEL securing the order as the sole bidder. BHEL clarified that it had submitted a price bid for the project on December 21, 2023, and emerged as the sole bidder in the competitive tendering process initiated by NTPC. As per regulatory norms, the submission of a bid does not guarantee automatic procurement of the contract, thus not mandating immediate disclosure under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Regulations, 2015.
This landmark order not only underscores BHEL’s leading position in the power sector but also highlights its ongoing commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions to meet India’s growing energy needs. With a track record of excellence spanning decades, BHEL continues to play a pivotal role in India’s journey towards achieving self-reliance in power generation and infrastructure development.
