Luxury Carmaker Aims to Expand Electric Portfolio and Sales
Audi, the renowned German luxury car manufacturer, has set its sights on a significant shift in its sales landscape in India, projecting that by 2030, half of its sales will be electric vehicles (EVs). Balbir Singh Dhillon, Audi India’s Head, shared this ambition and strategy for the future in a recent interaction, outlining the company’s plans to expand its EV lineup and grow market penetration.
Presently, Audi garners only 3% of its sales from EVs, focusing primarily on cars priced above Rs 1.2 crore. To achieve its 50% EV sales target by 2030, Dhillon emphasized the need for an expanded product range tailored to diverse market segments, anticipating the introduction of more affordable EV models in the coming years.
While the luxury carmaker sold 7,931 units in 2023, marking an 89% increase from the previous year, EVs still constitute a small share of the overall luxury car segment in India. The company is strategically aligning its offerings with the evolving market demands, planning to introduce more EV models by 2025, intending for some to reach Indian shores.
In its recent launch, Audi introduced the Q8 e-tron with a choice between two battery options, distinguishing itself with a 114 kWh battery, the largest among Indian EVs. The company priced these variants between Rs 1.13 crore and Rs 1.3 crore, offering driving ranges from 505 km to 600 km on a single charge, aligning with European WLTP mode standards.
The luxury car market’s EV penetration currently stands at 5%, where Audi’s share reaches 3%. However, Dhillon articulated the company’s roadmap, aiming for a 15% EV sales share by 2025-26 and eventually targeting 50% by 2030, aligning with Audi’s global aspiration to transition into a fully electric vehicle manufacturer by 2033.
Acknowledging the impact of taxation and duty on EV prices, Dhillon urged for a level playing field for all manufacturers, emphasizing fair policies for equitable benefits across the industry. He welcomed the entry of major players like Tesla into the Indian market, foreseeing enhanced EV adoption rates and the proliferation of charging infrastructure with increased competition.
As Audi steers toward a future centered on EVs, the company is optimistic about sustained growth momentum in India. Despite challenges in the current global scenario impacting supply chains, Audi anticipates high double-digit growth for the year, bolstered by an evolving luxury car market and the company’s strategic EV portfolio expansion.
