German automaker Audi expresses confidence in the Indian market while acknowledging the challenges posed by high taxes that hinder the penetration of luxury cars in the country compared to Southeast Asian counterparts. A senior official from the company disclosed plans to cut into the nascent Indian luxury car space and addressed the potential for growth in the midst of economic and regulatory uncertainties.
Audi anticipates the luxury car market in India to experience moderate to low double-digit growth in 2024, a shift from the impressive 25% growth observed in 2023. Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head of Audi India, noted that despite the challenges, the overall automotive industry and luxury segment in India are on an upward trajectory, aligning with the country’s growing GDP and favorable industry parameters.
Dhillon highlighted India’s nascent stage in the luxury car space, with approximately 48,500 luxury cars sold in 2023, representing just over 1% of the overall car industry
. In comparison to Southeast Asian markets where luxury car penetration ranges from 5 to 20%, India has significant growth potential in this segment.
The main obstacle identified by Dhillon is the high tax rate on luxury cars in India, currently around 50% (including GST plus cess). He emphasized that a rationalization of taxes to a lower level would be crucial to fueling the growth of the luxury car market further. Despite these challenges, Audi sees itself in a favorable position, given the country’s overall economic growth and increasing consumer spending capacity.
Dhillon stated, “We believe we are in the right space at a good time, and it’s time for India, and we will continue to grow as well.” However, he acknowledged that until tax structures are rationalized, growth in the luxury car market may be at a lower pace.
Audi’s optimistic outlook comes in the wake of the company’s impressive performance in 2023, where it grew by almost 90%, outpacing the industry’s growth of 27%. In 2023, Audi India sold 7,931 units, a significant increase from 4,187 units in 2022.
Looking ahead to 2024, Dhillon foresees continued growth for both Audi and the industry, albeit at a lower pace compared to the exceptional numbers recorded in the previous year. The company remains confident in its ability to navigate the evolving market dynamics and capitalize on India’s potential as a key growth market for luxury cars. As the nation’s economy expands, Audi aims to establish a stronger foothold, provided that tax rationalization facilitates a more conducive environment for growth in the luxury car segment.
