Asian Markets Mixed on China’s Soft Inflation Data; U.S. CPI Report Looms

Asian shares experienced a mixed session on Wednesday as China’s latest inflation data revealed continuing economic softness, while investors worldwide braced for a crucial U.S. inflation report that could influence Federal Reserve policy on interest rates.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dipped by 0.1%, with Japan’s Nikkei dropping 0.8%. Despite this overall subdued performance, the technology sector saw gains. The MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan IT index rose by 1%, buoyed by a strong performance from tech companies.

China’s Inflation Data and Market Reaction

China’s consumer price index (CPI) for May showed a slight decrease of 0.1% month-on-month, missing market forecasts. Annually, the CPI rose by a modest 0.3%. These figures indicate persistent low inflation, reflecting ongoing economic challenges in China. Consequently, China’s blue-chip stocks fell by 0.1%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropped 1.2%, compounded by a dramatic 27% fall in China Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group shares due to asset loss warnings.

U.S. Market Influence and Tech Sector Performance

Overnight gains on Wall Street, particularly a 7% surge in Apple shares following the announcement of new AI features for iPhones, positively influenced the technology sector in Asia. This momentum helped Taiwan and South Korean shares rise by 0.7% and 0.3%, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite rose by 0.9%, and the S&P 500 gained 0.3%, both hitting record highs.

    Anticipation of U.S. Inflation Data

Investors are keenly awaiting the U.S. CPI data release, expected to show a 0.1% increase for May, with the core CPI predicted to rise by 0.3%. This data is crucial as it will inform the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions. Futures for both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq remained flat during Asian trading hours, indicating a cautious market stance.

Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, highlighted the market’s cautious approach, stating, “The countdown is on, with the market going into full risk management mode.” He added that minor fluctuations in the core CPI could significantly impact market sentiment and U.S. dollar movements.

    Currency and Bond Markets

In the currency markets, the dollar index held steady at 105.31, maintaining gains from last Friday’s strong payrolls data. The euro continued its downward trend, trading at $1.0734 amid European political uncertainties, including far-right electoral gains and an impending snap election in France.

U.S. Treasury yields remained stable after a successful 10-year Treasury auction, with the 10-year yield at 4.4099%. Analysts from TD Securities suggested that Treasury movements would likely depend on the Fed’s “dot plot” projections and potential dovish signals from Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

    Commodity Markets

Oil prices continued their upward trajectory for the third consecutive session. Brent futures edged up by 0.2% to $83.11 per barrel, and U.S. crude futures increased by 0.4% to $78.19 per barrel. Meanwhile, gold prices saw a slight decline of 0.2%, bringing them to $2,311.80 per ounce.

As global markets await the upcoming U.S. inflation data and the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions, the balance between cautious optimism and economic apprehension remains delicate, with potential implications for both regional and global financial landscapes.
