Apple Slashes iPhone Prices in China Amid Fierce Competition from Huawei

In a strategic move to defend its position in the high-end smartphone market, Apple has launched an aggressive discounting campaign on its official Tmall site in China, offering discounts of up to 2,300 yuan ($318) on select iPhone models. This substantial discount is part of a week-long promotion running from May 20 to May 28.

The discounts mark a significant escalation from Apple’s previous campaign in February, where the highest discount offered was 1,150 yuan. This time, the most considerable price cut applies to the 1TB iPhone 15 Pro Max model, while other models also see substantial reductions. For example, the 128 GB version of the base iPhone 15 model now has a discount of 1,400 yuan, as confirmed by Reuters on Monday.

This discounting effort comes as Apple faces mounting competitive pressure from local rivals, particularly Huawei. Last month, Huawei introduced its new series of high-end smartphones, the Pura 70, following the launch of the Mate 60 series in August. These new models have intensified the competition in China’s lucrative high-end smartphone market.

Apple’s February discount campaign appeared to mitigate a slowdown in sales in China. According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), Apple’s shipments in China increased by 12% in March. This growth is a significant rebound from the first two months of 2024, during which Apple experienced a 37% slump in sales.

The aggressive pricing strategy highlights Apple’s commitment to maintaining its market share in China, a critical region for its global sales. The high-end smartphone market in China is fiercely contested, with local brands like Huawei, known for their innovative features and competitive pricing, posing a significant challenge to international giants like Apple.

As Apple continues to navigate this competitive landscape, these strategic discounts may play a crucial role in attracting Chinese consumers and sustaining its growth momentum in one of the world’s most dynamic smartphone markets.
