In a significant restructuring move, tech giant Apple Inc. has laid off more than 600 employees in California following the cessation of its ambitious car and smartwatch display projects. According to filings with the California Employment Development Department, the layoffs were executed as part of Apple’s strategic decisions to halt these initiatives.
The Cupertino-based company filed eight separate reports under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) program, as mandated by state regulations. Each report corresponds to a California address affected by the layoffs. Notably, at least 87 individuals were associated with a clandestine Apple facility dedicated to next-generation screen development, while the remainder were linked to buildings related to the now-discontinued car project.
At the conclusion of February, Apple initiated the wind-down process for both projects, which were hailed as groundbreaking endeavors aimed at advancing the company’s technological prowess and exploring new market segments. The decision to terminate the car project stemmed from internal indecision among executives regarding its strategic direction and mounting concerns over costs. Similarly, challenges in engineering, supplier relations, and costs led to the closure of the smartwatch display program.
According to the filings, the majority of layoffs—amounting to 371 employees—took place at Apple’s primary office associated with the car project in Santa Clara, California. Additional workers across various satellite offices were also affected by the restructuring. Notably, some members of the Apple car group were reassigned to different teams within the company, focusing on areas such as artificial intelligence and personal robotics.
An Apple spokesperson declined to provide specific details on the extent of the layoffs. However, it’s important to note that the WARN notices do not encompass the complete scope of job reductions at Apple, as numerous engineers involved in the projects were situated in other locations, including Arizona.
The layoffs mark a significant shift in Apple’s strategic direction, underscoring the challenges inherent in pursuing ambitious projects in the highly competitive technology landscape. As the company pivots its focus, observers await insights into its future endeavors and the potential impact on its product roadmap and innovation agenda.
