The artificial intelligence (AI) sector experienced a significant setback late on Tuesday as major players, including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), reported quarterly results that fell short of investors’ expectations. The collective market cap of AI-related companies witnessed a staggering $190 billion decline, signaling a sharp correction after a sustained period of growth that had propelled their stocks to record highs.
The sell-off, triggered by the post-earnings reports of these tech giants, highlighted the heightened expectations investors had following a surge in the AI-fueled stock market in recent months. This rally had previously driven shares to unprecedented levels, driven by the promise of widespread integration of AI technologies across various industries.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, saw a 5.6% drop after its December-quarter ad revenue failed to meet expectations. Additionally, Alphabet disclosed an increased spending on data centers to support its AI initiatives, emphasizing the costs incurred in the fierce competition with AI rival Microsoft.
While Google Cloud’s revenue growth slightly exceeded Wall Street targets, with interest in AI playing a role, Microsoft’s Azure outpaced it in growth. Microsoft managed to beat analyst estimates for quarterly revenue, thanks to new AI features attracting customers to its cloud and Windows services. However, the company’s stock experienced a 0.7% decline in extended trading, despite briefly reaching an intra-day record high earlier in the day.
The optimism surrounding AI had previously driven Microsoft’s stock market value above $3 trillion, surpassing Apple’s valuation earlier this month.
Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) faced a 6% decline as its forecast for first-quarter revenue fell short of estimates, even though it projected robust sales for its AI processors. Nvidia, another major player in the AI space, saw its shares retreat over 2%, relinquishing some of the gains from a 27% surge in January, which followed a more than tripling of its value in the previous year, fueled by optimism in the AI sector.
Super Micro Computer, a server manufacturer benefiting from increased demand for AI-related technologies, witnessed a drop of over 3%. Interestingly, the company had reached a record high earlier on Tuesday after delivering exceptional quarterly results.
The market correction serves as a reminder of the inherent volatility and sensitivity of the AI industry, where investors closely monitor the performance of key players and their ability to meet the soaring expectations associated with the integration of AI technologies in various sectors.
