Adani Ports, one of India’s leading ports operators, saw its shares soar to a new all-time high on March 4 following a remarkable 33% surge in cargo volumes recorded in February.

According to the company’s filing with the exchanges, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) handled a total cargo volume of 35.4 million metric tonnes (MMT) in February, marking a significant 33% increase compared to the volumes handled during the same period last year.

The surge in cargo volumes was widespread across various ports, with Dhamra Port achieving its highest-ever monthly cargo volume of 4.22 MMT, further bolstering APSEZ’s overall performance.

As of 9:20 AM on March 4, shares of Adani Ports were trading at Rs 1,352.7 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), reflecting a 1% increase from the previous session.

In the 11 months leading up to February 2024, Adani Ports handled a total cargo volume of 382 MMT, indicating strong momentum and positioning the company well to surpass the 400 MMT mark by the end of the financial year in March.

Adani Ports attributed its success to surpassing the 350 MMT cargo volume mark at its domestic ports within just 318 days, underscoring its operational efficiency and strategic growth initiatives.

Additionally, the company’s logistics arm witnessed robust growth, with year-to-date rail volumes up by 21% year-on-year, reaching 542,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), and General Purpose Wagon Investment Scheme volumes rising by 40% year-on-year to approximately 18 MMT.

Motilal Oswal, a prominent brokerage firm, expressed bullish sentiment towards Adani Ports and SEZ, recommending a buy rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 1,410 in a report dated January 8.

The impressive performance of Adani Ports is reflected in its stock price, which has surged by approximately 70% over the past six months. In comparison, the benchmark Nifty 50 index has witnessed a modest increase of around 14% during the same period.

As Adani Ports continues to demonstrate robust operational capabilities and solidifies its position as a key player in India’s maritime industry, investors are optimistic about its growth prospects, driving its stock to new heights in the market.
